Resumo

Medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS) seems to negatively impact ankle biomechanics. However, the influence of this injury on ankle muscle strength is still not clearly established. This study aimed to compare the muscular strength of dorsiflexors and plantar flexors of the ankle between amateur runners with and without MTSS. Twenty-two subjects were recruited and distributed in two groups (SETM Group = 11 and Control Group = 11), before the physical exam for MTSS diagnosis. The isokinetic strength of dorsiflexors and plantar flexors of both groups was evaluated using the Biodex 4 dynamometer, in concentric and eccentric contraction modes. The group with MTSS had concentric torque peak of dorsiflexors (6.2 Nm ±2.96), compared to the control group (9.7 Nm ±3.52) p = 0.02. Comparing the forces observed during a running balance phase (concentric dorsiflexes by eccentric plantar flexors), the SETM group on average had a lower participation of the dorsiflexors (0.18 0.07) compared to the group without SETM (0.31 0.09) p = 0.004. The comparison variables between plantar flexors forces (concentric or eccentric) and a force ratio during a running support phase between groups. Runners with MTSS have lower ankle muscle strength and lower force ratios during the exercise phase of the running, compared to healthy runners
