Resumo

The process of internationalization of higher education can be understood from different perspectives and with different expectations, and therefore the interpretations about what is internationalization and what characterizes an internationalized university may differ. The present work aims to perform a critical analysis on the concepts and models of internationalization available, also addressing the theme of cooperation with emphasis on models of horizontal cooperation. It also intends to systematize information on internationalization and cooperation between the Federal University of Amapá, the Université de Guyane (French Guyana) and Anton de Kom Universiteit (Suriname), in order to obtain an overview of the current situation. Given this breadth of understanding about what it is, how to implement and what results to expect from this process, there are many internationalization models, which will be addressed in the first chapter of this work. International cooperation, with emphasis on horizontal cooperation models for the establishment of academic relations based on mutual benefit, will be the theme developed in the second chapter. Concluding the theoretical context of this thesis and presenting the results of this research, the third chapter will be devoted to the Guyana region, and more specifically to French Guiana, Suriname and the state of Amapá, whose academic internationalization processes are the subject of this study. . The analysis confirmed the initial hypothesis that the relationship between these institutions has a low level of institutionalization, jeopardizing the progress of partnerships. This research used bibliographic and documentary research techniques and the collection of information from the application of structured questionnaires via email, face-to-face interviews and by videoconference and analysis of previous interinstitutional cooperation cases among the three universities
