Resumo

The main focus of this study is to address the concept of 1st order linear recurrence, more particularly the resolution of problems of arithmetic and geometric progressions, for students in the 2nd Stage (2nd and 3rd grades of High School) of Young Adult Education (EJA ), through a didactic teaching sequence based on the methodology of Didactic Engineering. Therefore, the following specific objectives were defined: to conceptualize didactic engineering and its historical context; conceptualize the resolution of mathematical problems; present the teaching of youth and adult education in Brazil; define arithmetic, geometric progressions and first-order recurrences; and to analyze whether the students in the researched group are able to solve specific problems of arithmetic and geometric progressions, and if they understand the concept of first-order recurrence. This theme is justified by the fact that students of youth and adult education do not have many textbooks adapted to the modality and at their disposal, as any materials produced for this modality are of great value. The present study consists of a descriptive research, with results presented in a qualitative and quantitative way, from the collection of information from primary and secondary sources. With the collection of information throughout the research and analysis of the information, it was possible to conclude that EJA students are able to understand and solve mathematical problems, as long as there is a well-planned class and that the concepts are well placed for them, the same happens with application of the concept of first-order recurrence, but many studies and works still have to be done and disseminated for the Youth and Adult Education modality
