A ineficiência do saneamento básico e suas implicações na saúde pública no distrito do Elesbão – Santana/AP

Abstract

The emergence of cities in an unplanned way eventually triggered a series of social, economic and environmental problems. One of the sectors that have aggravated this situation in most Brazilian cities is basic sanitation, this system is not working as it should, in the northern region the problem is even worse, resulting in serious problems and harm to society, and compromising the environment. In recent decades, concern about the environment and its implications on human health has gained increasing relevance in congresses and discussions boards about the damage being caused by man's own negligence in its relationship with the environment in which they live. Into this context, this research aims to conduct a study on social-environmental at Elesbão District, mainly focusing the problems facing the infrastructure, especially basic sanitation and its impact on public health. The study area is located at the banks of the north canal on Amazon River´s mouth (near the Port of Santana) and presents basic sanitary conditions appalling, considering that the physiological eliminations and other household wastes are deposited in the open or on River. It has approximately 4311 inhabitants (IBGE, 2007). The study focused on collecting data from government agencies,” in lócus” observation, questionnaires, interviews and photographs. The results were presented in the analysis of basic sanitation, public health, infrastructure, housing and social aspects. By the results, it was found that the Elesbão District has serious problems with public health by the absence of sewage, treated water and lack of community awareness about preserving the environment better. The information generated has fundamental importance to attend basic needs of the community from public policies for its reality.
