Resumo

Prematurity is characterized by birth before completing 37 weeks of gestation, with high rates of morbidity and mortality. The prevalence of preterm birth has increased gradually in the Brazilian series. In this context, the Amapa state holds rates higher than the average of the North and Northeast, with lack of analysis of the profile of this population. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe and analyze the information on premature live births from resident mothers of Amapa state in 2012. A descriptive analysis of the epidemiological profile of preterm birth (gestational age between 22 and 36 weeks, weighing more than 500g), according to data released by Live Birth Information System (SINASC). The chi-square test was used to calculate the odds ratio (OR) between the dependent variable (prematurity) and the independent variables (type of birth, maternal age, education, prenatal visits and birth weight), with 95% and significance level for the results of p <0.05. The data were analyzed 1,916 premature births, representing a prevalence of 13.8% in 2012. There was a higher frequency of births between 32 and 36 weeks of gestation (86.74%), males (52.4%) and without congenital anomaly (97.9%). The proportion of low birth weight among premature infants was 32.4%. It identified a positive association between preterm birth and cesarean delivery (OR: 1.26); low birth weight (OR: 13.20); have performed less than seven prenatal consultations (OR: 1.69); mothers in adolescent age group (OR: 1.29) and less than seven full years of formal schooling (OR: 1.15). We conclude that efforts to increase the quality of care for maternal and child health should be considered during the gestational cycle and early life of the newborn preterm in the state of Amapa
