Resumo

The practice of street racing has grown over the years in Brazil and in the world. The modality brings several health benefits and the costs to practice it are small, however, recreational runners are often affected by injuries such as Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS) that has a multifactorial etiology, such as sports practice performed without adequate or excessive training. The aim of this study is to investigate the existence of an association between training variables and MTSS in recreational runners. Study design: Cross-sectional quantitative study. Methodology: Recreational runners were divided into two groups: Control and MTSS. Personal data, anthropometric and training characteristics were collected through interviews. The physical assessment was conducted to identify the runners who were or were not affected by MTSS. Data were collected through questionnaires composed of two units: personal data and level of physical activity, with self-reported answers. The binary logistic regression test was used for association analysis applied to the training characteristics. Independent student t test and chi-square test were used for the analysis of baseline variables. Results: 42 runners participated in the study. There was a significant difference between the groups in the variables professional follow-up, resulting in five times more chance of MTSS involvement in supervised runners: OR = 5.35; Confidence Interval (CI) 95% (1.082 to 26.505) p= 0.040, and mileage in the last three months: OR= 0.99; 95% CI (0.985 to 1.000) p=0.049. Conclusion: The data shows that professional follow-up was associated with a higher risk of MTSS in recreational runners and shorter distances covered in the last three months indicated a lower risk of developing the syndrome.
