Resumo

Introduction: Female pelvic width has been hypothesized as a risk factor for the development of Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS), however, there is no evidence in literature that supports this theory. Objective: To evaluate whether pelvic width, and its interaction with lower-limb musculoskeletal characteristics, is associated with patellofemoral pain syndrome in women. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 100 women, with (n = 50) and without (n = 50) patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS). It measured pelvic width (Anthropometer), hip abductor muscle strength (dynamometer), lower limb function (single-leg hop test), physical activity level, rectus femoris muscle stiffness (Ely test) and lower limb length discrepancy. A binary logistic regression was conducted using the hierarchical method. Results: The pelvic width and the hip abductor muscle strength there were no association with PFPS. Furthermore, the lower physical activity level (p=0,052), the presence of rectus femoris muscle stiffness (p=0,005) and lower function (p=0,013) were associated with PFPS. Conclusion: The pelvic width and abduction muscle strength do not have association with PFPS, nevertheless lower 11 physical activity level, the presence of rectus femoris muscle stiffness and lower function were associated with PFPS.
