A Folha de São Paulo e a questão da imigração no governo de Donald Trump (2017-2020)

Abstract

In this dissertation, I sought to analyze to what extent the elaboration of news produced by Journal Folha de S. Paulo about the immigration policy developed in the administration of the President of the United States Donald Trump, in the period 2017-2020, raised forms of writing and how this news production organized forms of historical representation about this government. To analyze the meaning and importance of the newspaper as a source and object of study in historical research, I sought, based on Roger Chartier (2002), to develop an approach aligned with Cultural History, in which recent cultural practices change the forms of relationship between the reader and the text, in its various reading devices. In theoretical conformity with the historians Maria Helena Capelato and Tania Regina de Luca, it was possible to expand the study on this press from the methodological questions of History and the Press indicated by the authors with regard to the analysis procedures of the great press. For the proposed objectives, a total of 9,291 online editions of Folha de S. Paulo were mapped, about the government of President Donald Trump, with 1,286 editions dedicated to the issue of immigration. The research indicated that Journal Folha de S. Paulo practiced a coverage of speculative stages, with ideological narratives to gain public visibility regarding the government policy of President Donald Trump, which produced memories and forgetfulness about the events of this government through the emphasis on the denunciations of scandals, on the disqualification of the politician and especially on the theme of immigration that somehow reflected the restlessness of the American political context
