Resumo

Dynapenic abdominal obesity (DAO) is characterized by the association of abdominal obesity (OA) with dynapenia in older adults. In addition, studies analyzing respiratory function have already shown that OA can cause damage to ventilatory mechanics, with repercussions on the diaphragm muscle, which in the long term may present respiratory muscle weakness; however, few studies have demonstrated these impairments of pulmonary function in individuals with DAO. Objectives: To compare respiratory muscle strength and analyze whether there is an association between maximal respiratory pressures in community-dwelling elderly people with and without AO, dynapenia and DAO. Methods: A cross-sectional study conducted with community-dwelling older adults people in Macapá – AP. Respiratory muscle strength was assessed using analog manovacuometry to obtain maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures (MIP and MEP, respectively). Dynapenia was identified by the cut-offs points for handgrip strength (<26 Kgf for men and <16 Kgf for women), while for AO the values of abdominal circumference (>102 cm for men and >88 cm for women); and DAO was identified by the combination of AO and dynapenia. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyzes were performed using Student's t test and linear regression model (p<0.05). Project approved by the Research Ethics Committee (Opinion 1,738,671). Results: A total of 382 older adults were evaluated, 131 males (34.3%) and 251 females (65.7%) with a mean age of 70.03±7.3 years. The prevalence of AO corresponded to 65.7% (n=251); 18.5% (n=71) dynapenia and 10.7% (n=41) DAO. The adjusted analysis indicated an association between MIP and conditions, namely: dynapenia (MIP - β=-0.171; p<0.001), AO (MIP - β=0.102; p=0.042) and DAO (MIP - β= -0.101; p<0.028). Conclusion: Older adults with AO, dynapenia and DAO showed impairment of maximal respiratory pressures, with emphasis on MIP. In addition, only MIP was associated with the conditions studied.
