Resumo
The 2021 school census indicated 123 schools offering secondary education in Amapá. Four schools use the Civic-Military methodology and six have shared management with the Military Police, Fire Department, and the Brazilian Army. This study compared educational indices and investments among four schools: two civic-military and two regular high schools. Data were collected, tabulated, and analyzed to understand the factors that influence school performance. The study found that the coronavirus pandemic has negatively affected student learning and performance. Civic-military schools had the highest percentage of students with age-grade distortion, a serious educational problem in Brazil. Educational indicators are essential to validate and monitor the quality of teaching. Investment in education is essential to improve these indicators, but schools showed default in data collection. The study concluded that schools do not need discipline imposed by a program, but technical, financial, structural, and technological support, in addition to conditions of access and permanence for students. The civic-military schools were not superior to the regular schools, and both need improvements in several aspects to offer a participatory and democratic quality education
