Nou Bon Ké Sa! – Análise das movimentações sociais de 2017 na Guiana Francesa

Abstract

This research aims at analyzing, qualitatively and in an exploratory way, social mobilizations ran in French Guiana (FG) between March and April 2017. We conducted a multidisciplinary historical inquiry on the singularities of FG. The bibliographical research also included a discussion on social mobilization and the conceptual apparatus of the Copenhagen School and Peace Studies on conflict. The study method encompasses the use of 'source criticism' and the historical method for interpreting the content in France-Guyane samples, the local printed newspaper. Our focus is on local non-state actors. Our analysis shows that the 2017 event was the most prominent popular manifestation so far in the history of this territorial collectivity, engaging people from different background and ethnicities that compose FG. Nevertheless, even though the newspaper emphasized groups’ unity, cohesion was not unison, given the multiplicity of actors and demands. We conclude that Guianese society has been rebuilding its identity, demanding for their assured rights concerning equality defended by the French republican ideology. At the same time, they reclaim symbols and values from the peoples that compose Guiana.
