Abstract

This article aims to inquire about a misunderstanding that has been continued for a long time: that Gothic literature is reduced to a single artistic expression which is Noite na Taverna by Álvares de Azevedo. This idea is a consequence of facts that happened during the creation of brazilian literature, which does not turn this research into something simple. Do not claim the existence of Fear Literature in Brazil leads us to question: what should be considered an element of fear? This proposal will show the pivotal role of a country where horror is also institutional. To answer the question and to achieve the paper’s goals the methodology adopted was the qualitative bibliographic research, exploratory, assisted by the method of Análise Literária by Massaud Moisés and other theoretical studies beginning with an overview of the elements that build this literary style, scientific articles and excerpts of the story Sem Olhos by Machado de Assis.
