Resumo

The buffalo farming is an activity that has conquered space in Brazilian livestock, with expressive growth becoming a viable zootechnical option. Despite the large production of buffalo meat in the country, its consumption is still low, which is attributed to a lack of knowledge of the benefits of meat. The aim of this study was to characterize the profile of the consumer/potential consumer of buffalo meat in the city of Mazagão, Amapá. The study was carried out between the months of November 2020 and January 2021, with 62 residents of the municipality of Mazagão, through field research, using a quali-quantitative approach. The data collection instrument adopted was the semi-structured interview, with open and closed questions. The research identified the low level of consumer knowledge about buffalo meat and its origin, including the benefits of the product, with the main option being the consumption of chicken meat. It is concluded that potential buffalo meat consumers need to have more information about the characteristics, benefits and advantages of the product, so that there can be an increase in its consumption, and, consequently, stimulate a greater supply of buffalo meat in the local market
