Luísa e Capitu: personagens com perfis convergentes e divergentes no realismo do século XIX

Abstract

From the readings we made about the novels O primo Basílio, written by Eça de Queirós, and Dom Casmurro, by Machado de Assis, both belonging to Portuguese and Brazilian Realism in the nineteenth century, we note the occurrence of unique issues from each school. We saw that in spite of the realistic novel have been written by male authors, we note that the characters are female (Louise and Capitu) that gain relevance and importance in the course of the two works. We also realized that "the unveiling of patriarchal ideology, embedded in the construction of characters and the unfolding of the story itself" (Xavier, 1999, p. 18), offered us arguments that the standards of behavior imposed both by Eca de Queiros and so as by Machado de Assis does not truly represent the profile of Portuguese and Brazilian women, respectively, in this period. For this reason, we set out to identify in the works above mentioned, convergent and divergent points between these two iconic characters in literature and the profile of each one of them, in Realism.
