Resumo
People enhance their work and social skills through education practices. Usually such knowledge is transmitted in a systematised fashion using textbooks which represent the main learning resource in Brazilian public schools. Among the different topics covered in biology textbooks, the cytogenetics represents the middle ground between genetics and cell biology. A high school student must learn some aspects of cytogenetics such as chromosome structure, species conservation, evolution and phylogeny. The present study aimed to analyse three different high school textbooks given to students within the last nine years in public schools at Oiapoque (AP). Only contents related to cytogenetics were surveyed. Aspects such as visual resources, contextualisation and the applicability of this topic to the student’s life were evaluated. Each textbook dealt with the cytogenetic theme in a specific way however only one of them mentioned cytogenetics as science but all of them committed small misakes. Their approach was directed to the health sciences associating the karyotype to human diseases and sex differentiation. None of the textbooks associated cytogenetics to species conservation and evolution. The present study showed that some improvements must be done in the textbooks because they did not follow the rules of the PCN’s. The textbooks did not connected all thetopics concerning to cytogenetics, providing rote learning information to the stu dents. Unfortunately it is still na idealisation to associate the gained knowledge from the classroom to the reality of each student. One important step to surpass this almost impossible task is to improve the textbooks of the students
