A dignidade da pessoa humana: olhar tríade para a Política Nacional de Cuidados Paliativos

Abstract

Introduction: The National Policy on Palliative Care (NPPC) represents a significant milestone in care for illness and end-of-life situations. Objective: Analyze the Policy through the lens of human dignity, considering its legal, medical, and psychological foundations. Method: To this end, a documentary research methodology was employed to identify principles, guidelines, and legal instruments related to the promotion of dignified illness and death, as well as comprehensive care within the NPPC. Development: The findings highlight a positive advancement by consolidating previously dispersed regulations and acknowledging the multidimensional nature of human suffering. The policy incorporates constitutional principles such as universality and comprehensiveness of the Unified Health System (UHS), emphasizing respect for autonomy, total pain, and advance directives. Conclusion: It is concluded that palliative care, by ensuring quality of life until the end, serves as a means of upholding human dignity as a fundamental right within the context of the UHS.
