Resumo
Asphalt paving is of fundamental importance for mobility and socioeconomic deve lopment. However, the search for sustainable and higher-performance materials has driven the adoption of new technologies. Thus, this research aims to analyze the use of additives in asphalt binders, with a view to increasing durability and resistance and reducing environmental impacts, as well as assessing their impact on the maintenance costs of the sections analyzed. The research was developed using a qualitative-quan titative approach, structured to provide an in-depth analysis of the materials, technolo gies, and standards applicable to asphalt paving in regions with a humid tropical cli mate. The conclusions highlight the use of polymers such as SBS (Styrene-Butadiene Styrene), which improves flexibility and resistance to permanent deformation. The practices adopted in recent paving projects and the geotechnical challenges encoun tered on the BR-156/AP highway, located in the state of Amapá, were discussed. The analysis indicates that the incorporation of modifiers in the binder may represent an advance for sustainable paving, especially in regions with adverse climatic and geo technical conditions, with a potential positive impact on cost reduction throughout the pavement life cycle.
